MOT Type 1 and sub-base materials

MOT Type 1 (granular sub-base to SHW Clause 803) is our highest-volume line and the default sub-base for driveways, patios, car parks and light-highways work. Supplied to full DfT specification, crushed and graded 0–63 mm, with certificates of conformity available on request for public-sector and adopted-highway schemes.

For permeable paving and SuDS-compliant driveways we also stock open-graded Type 3 and 4/20 mm clean stone, sized to act as both load-bearing layer and attenuation reservoir.

Ballast, concreting sand and building sand

20 mm all-in ballast for on-site concrete, sharp (grit) sand for screeds and laying courses, and soft building sand for mortar mixes — all delivered loose in tipper loads, grab lorries or 850 kg bulk bags depending on site access.

For larger civils projects we can dedicate a rolling delivery schedule with priced-per-tonne rates that undercut most builder's merchants.

Pipe bedding and surround aggregates

Pipe bedding is one of our highest-turnover civils lines, stocked in every common size: 4/10 mm for Class S bedding to small-diameter runs, 10 mm single size, 4/14 mm and 14 mm single size, and 4/20 mm and 20 mm single size for larger-diameter pipes and deeper trenches. 6 mm pea shingle covers cable, duct and service surround.

Sizing follows the pipe and the trench: single-size clean stone gives a free-draining, self-compacting surround that will not point-load the pipe, while graded 4/10 and 4/20 bedding beds and hauches in one operation on foul and surface-water drainage. Recycled pipe bedding is available on most schemes where the specification permits, with testing data supplied on request.

Delivered loose by 8-wheel tipper, grab lorry or artic for trench-side discharge, or in bulk bags where access is tight. Where we are also taking dig arisings away, the same lorry returns loaded — cutting haulage cost and empty running.

Bulk earthworks and civils aggregates

For large earthworks and infrastructure schemes we supply 6F5 capping to SHW Clause 613 — primary crushed and recycled 6F5 — plus graded fill by the artic load, scheduled directly to site so your muckshift and import programmes stay in step.

Recycled Type 1 and recycled capping are available on most schemes at lower cost and lower embodied carbon than primary stone, with testing data provided on request.

Decorative and specialist stone

Cotswold, Plum Slate, Scottish Pebble, 20 mm golden gravel and other decorative aggregates supplied by the bulk bag or tonne. For SuDS resin-bound driveways we supply 2–6 mm dried aggregate blends in matched batches.

Highways aggregates including Type 1 SHW-compliant sub-base, 6 mm and 10 mm surface course chippings, and railway ballast are available to spec on request.

Frequently asked questions

What is your minimum order for bulk aggregate delivery?

Minimums vary by product and postcode — most tipper loads are 16–20 tonnes and bulk bags start at a single 850 kg bag. We'll match the vehicle to the load rather than force a minimum you don't need.

How quickly can you deliver MOT Type 1?

Stocked MOT Type 1 leaves within 24–72 hours across most of England and Wales, depending on postcode and depot. Scotland and Highland deliveries are typically 3–5 working days.

Which pipe bedding size do I need?

For small-diameter foul and surface-water runs, 4/10 mm graded bedding or 10 mm single size is the usual choice. Larger-diameter and deeper trenches take 4/20 mm or 20 mm single size, and 6 mm pea shingle is used for cable and duct surround. Tell us the pipe diameter, trench depth and specification and we will confirm the size with your quote.

Do you deliver pipe bedding in bulk?

Yes — pipe bedding is delivered loose by 8-wheel tipper, grab lorry or artic for trench-side discharge, or in bulk bags where access is restricted. Stocked sizes are typically on site within 24–72 hours, and recycled pipe bedding is available where the specification allows.

Do you supply certified aggregates for highways or public-sector work?

Yes — SHW-compliant Type 1, 6 mm and 10 mm chippings and other DfT-graded aggregates are supplied with certificates of conformity on request.
